ICU Journey

When your child is in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), you can still feel lost and alone, even when surrounded by family and friends. As you sit impatiently in the family waiting room, you might see other visitors strolling through their phones, laughing, and socializing with one another. You soon realize that no one understands your jitters due to nervousness, stress, and overwhelming emotions, as the burden of responsibility is still on you to make the best decision for your child. You spend sleepless nights and every awakening moment hoping and praying for a miracle to pull your child through their life-threatening illness or circumstance.

That’s where I would like to join you. I endeavor to encourage, empower, and strengthen you to confidentially make those hard decisions when advocating and caring for your child in the ICU. Together, we explore the value of advocacy and being present for your child and yourself during this crucial time.

With clarity and understanding, you will become a “soft-spoken, strong advocate” on behalf of your child’s health and well-being. I will be honored to support you in confidently navigating through this journey. I share the same practices I used that enabled me to live a life of no regret after advocating for Alicia, my daughter, during her long-term Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) stays.

I know how you feel. I, too, spent endless days and nights sleeping in a chair or fold-away cart as my daughter, Alicia, battled complications from Short Bowel Syndrome (SBS) in the PICU.

The days were long, and the nights were even longer!

My first introduction to PICU was scary, and I was continually on edge as I listened and jerked from the startling alarms and beeping of medical equipment. For a while, I was in complete disbelief as I tried to understand the frightening world I was thrust into, as Alicia had never been sick. Eventually, the PICU Parent’s Waiting Room became my new home, and I was there for countless days, weeks, and months. I focused on developing a mindset to support my daughter during this critical time best. Through my faith in Christ, I was encouraged, empowered, and strengthened to confidently make those hard decisions as I advocated and cared for her. I became Alicia’s soft-spoken, strong advocate, supporting her health and well-being.

Today, regardless of your belief system, I, too, am here to support you!

You do not have to experience or travel this journey alone. Where you are is relatable to me, as I understand your anxiousness, fears, sadness, and never-ending thoughts that run through your mind. Let’s talk and explore the value of being present for your child as you advocate and support them during this crucial time. As Alicia needed me, your child needs you to be their soft-spoken, strong advocate who understands how best to support them during this time.
